    This table is based on the coffee table designed by Godwin around 1866-67 and made for himself.  For a design by Godwin, dated 1875, for a coffee table of this form, see Susan Weber Soros, The Secular Furniture of E.W.     The present table is identical to the design published in Wyman & Sons’ Cabinet-Makers Pattern Book, 1877, published as a supplement to Furniture Gazette, 13 April 1878 (Weber, op. cit., under 21).
