Of the several leading gothic-revival architects for whom Hart, Son, Peard & Co. worked, the design of the present firedogs is closest to William Burges. This attribution is strengthened by the form of the grate (see right) which is seen in Burges interiors, for example in the Winter Smoking Room at Cardiff Castle.
A pair of firedogs to this pattern, with onyx cabochons, is in an American private collection.
