The Burgesian embellishment on this cauldron is based on Romanesque decoration dating from the twelfth century.
A cauldron of almost identical form and construction, but perhaps later in date (private collection), has a scheme of decoration deriving from plates in Owen Jones, The Grammar of Ornament, 1856. This second cauldron has stamped letters under the base: ‘I C’ and ‘PA…’
