Pair of candlesticks
Ferdinand Barbedienne (firm active 1839-1955)
20.8 cm (high)
French (Paris), 1860s
Each candlestick signed ‘F. BARBEDIENNE’ (see right)
The same model, in silver-plated brass, is in a private collection.
Work in the gothic taste is unusual in Barbedienne’s output, but the firm exhibited work in this vein at the London International Exhibition, 1862; see J.B. Waring,Masterpieces of Industrial Art …, London, 1863, II, pl. 206.
The form of Barbedienne’s candlesticks can be compared to a brass and champlevé enamel pair from Limoges, made around 1200 (Metropolitan Museum of Art, 17.190.345)
