Miracles of St Nicholas
Pen, ink and watercolour, and original (?) oak frame
55 x 55 cm (including frame)
English, probably third quarter of nineteenth century
Mrs Gertrude Holliday
The drawing is a record of a thirteenth-century mediaeval window, presumably in a French Gothic cathedral (perhaps Sainte-Chapelle?)
According to the label on the back (see right) this was at one stage thought to have been executed by William Burges. Given the Holliday family provenance, it is not inconceivable that the drawing has a connection with Burges, but this is a question requiring further research.
We are grateful to Peter Cormack and Sam Fogg for their thoughts on this drawing.
